The Reason Ederson Left Manchester City and Joined Fenerbahce
Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson has revealed why he decided to leave Manchester City after eight successful years to join Turkish giants Fenerbahce. The 32-year-old said he is now “breathing football again” following his permanent transfer in September, signing a three-year deal with the Super Lig club.

Ederson admitted that he was unhappy at City and had requested to leave the club in 2024. “The season before this one I had tried to leave [City], but it didn’t work out,” he explained during a news conference while on international duty with Brazil.
He also noted that staying at Manchester City despite his unhappiness affected his performance. They are resulting in multiple injuries and a lack of peak form. “There’s no point in being at a giant winning club if you’re not happy. I needed this change. With this change, I’m breathing football again and feeling the atmosphere of the games in Turkey, which is crazy,” Ederson said.
Eight Years of Triumph at Manchester City
Ederson played a central role in Manchester City’s dominance under Pep Guardiola. Besides that, including their historic treble season in 2022-23 and four consecutive Premier League titles from 2021 to 2024. During his eight-year stint, he won 18 trophies, cementing his legacy as one of City’s most decorated players.
Despite the success, Ederson said the move to Fenerbahce was necessary to reinvigorate his career. “It was eight wonderful years with City, and I won 18 titles. Besides that, I needed this change and a change of scenery,” he said, emphasizing the importance of fresh challenges.
He also explained that he aims to maintain his winning mentality at Fenerbahce. Besides that, it’s the same mindset that brought him success at City and Benfica. “I want to win at Fenerbahce too. Sometimes new challenges bring energy, positivity, and something new inside you,” he added.

Eyes on the World Cup

Ederson is also focused on representing Brazil at his third World Cup next year. He was recently included in Carlo Ancelotti’s latest squad after missing previous call-ups due to injury.
“I missed the last few call-ups because of injury, but my expectations of making the World Cup squad are high,” he said. “No player has a guaranteed spot, but I am ready to give my all if selected.”
His experience and current form make him an important asset for Brazil as they prepare for the 2026 tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Ambitions with Fenerbahce
At Fenerbahce, Ederson is determined to help the club win its first domestic title since 2014. He described the challenge as both exciting and motivating. “I hope I can help recapture that glory and bring the club back to the top,” he said.
The goalkeeper praised the passionate atmosphere of Turkish football, noting that it has reignited his love for the game. “I’m very happy with this challenge. The club hasn’t won a national title in a long time, and I want to be part of that journey,” he added.
Ederson’s move represents a fresh start and a personal mission to continue winning while inspiring his new teammates to reach the pinnacle of Turkish football. Follow the latest football news only at footballtipsonline.co.uk.
